The instructional strategies and resources are appropriate for addressing the needs of students who are gifted, those who exhibit advanced capabilities and/or those who demonstrate advanced academic performance. When planning instruction, it is important to remember that a student may express giftedness in a variety of ways and that a student may exhibit advanced capabilities or advanced academic performance in one or more subject areas. Many of the instructional strategies used to meet the needs of gifted students in grades K-12 are the same strategies used to differentiate instruction in any classroom. Directions and tools for using these instructional strategies are posted, as well as procedures for teachers to develop resources that challenge students using the strategies. Sample pre-assessment strategies and extension menus, learning contracts and Socratic Seminars in various subject areas are posted. Resources include interest and learning profiles, the Highly Able Student Action Plans for K - 5 and 6 - 8, and other ideas for challenging gifted students, in mathematics and language arts. Characteristics of gifted students are posted to help teachers realize the various ways in which students might exhibit giftedness. Open Minds, Open Doors Lessons, Extension Lessons and Learning Centers are posted to help teachers spot and nurture talent in kindergarten, first grade and second grade students. Resources and links are posted for Parents/Community members to access a Summer Reading List for students and information about the Frederick County Public Schools Elementary Magnet Program and Schoolwide Enrichment Program, and the worldwide Destination Imagination Program. Instructional strategies and resources are critical in meeting the needs of gifted and high performing students. Implementation of these and other teacher-developed resources based on these strategies should assist with providing an appropriate degree of academic rigor and challenge for students and help them to reach their full potential.
